In the 123 pound weight division, first place went to Jennifer G! With a weigh in of 120 pounds and a total lift of 675 pounds, Jennifer blew the competition away by a total of 150 pounds.

She squatted 300 pounds! For those of you who aren't sure what the squat is, the bar is loaded with the weights, the lifter puts the bar behind her head and rests it on her shoulders. The lifter then has to squat down with her feet staying flat on the ground. The lifters thighs have to be parallel with the ground before she can come back up. So she has to squat to the ground carrying 300 pounds on her shoulders adn then has to come back up to full standing position.

Did I say she only weighed in at 120?? I'm not sure how she does that, but damn it's amazing to watch!

The bench is her weak point. She has great legs and back strength, but has to work extra hard at her arms. She only benched 115 pounds. She was a little disappointed because she'd just lifted 125 in practice 2 days before the meet. Next time.

The last event was the deadlift. She started out at 245 and got that up fairly easily. Her 2nd attempt was with 260 and she couldn't get it up. We checked the numbers and she was going to get 1st place no matter what, so the coach told her to try a different stance and grip for the 3rd and final attempt. She would have to attempt 260 again and would win 1st no matter what, so she decided to go ahead and try the "conventional" grip. Her feet were closer together, instead of far apart. Her arms reach down and grab the bar outside of her legs instead of inside, and hot damn! She did it! She said she was amazed at how easy it was to get that 260 up with the conventional method of lifting.

Her next meet is about an hour and a half away. I've told her I'm going to try to make every meet this year. But I couldn't promise.

She's pushing herself, she wants to go to state and nationals her senior year so she'll have to push extra hard.

I think she can do it. She's got a lot of drive in her.
